E.E (Engineering Education)

EE solves all ur problems!

How to snag a top job. (Placement guide for a first year engineering student at NIT)

So you’ve slogged for 4 years for that B.Tech degree..how do you land that shiny post in a top firm that make your parents distribute laddoos in the neighbourhood?

1) A decent CGPA – if you can make it to 9, good for you! you are awesome and you’l definitely land that top job (you’l also land fully funded M.S programs abroad – and most 9 pointers I know don’t miss out on an amazing opportunity to enhance their careers this way)

A CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) in the 8/10 range too isn’t bad. Confidence and Extracurricular skillls will make you a winner at those campus placements.

For those with a 7/10 CGPA – not to worry, you will get a job too. You have what it takes to get into an NIT, hence companies know you are good. But I do not guarantee job satisfaction. And it might cost you a lot of waiting and worrying before you land that job.

2) Good internships/industrial training – Snagging a summer internship is a very difficult affair. It takes a lot of hard work consisting of google-searches, phone-calls and ass-kissing to get a decent internship. Hence the fact that you have done one (or two) will add a lot of gloss to your resume.

3)Extracurricular activities/certificates – An engineer needs to be good at getting stuff done. He has to know how to apply his theoretical knowledge in the real world. College activities give one a lot of scope to explore one’s personality and answer those tough interview questions like – “What are your strengths and weaknesses?”. I cannon emphasize how important organizing and taking part in college clubs, fests, technical events can be to enhhance your job-worthiness.

4)Communication skills – work on your English. You may be awesome, but you have to be able to communicate that to the interviewer and there is nothing like a fluent, confident young gun to impress your panel.Furthermore, most companies stress on a GD or group discussion session to select top students to be interviewed for appropriate placement in a job profile.

5)Aptitude Tests – the dreaded ‘Apti’s are the first step to snagging an interview at campus placements. CAT MCQs, puzzles, brain teasers, word games etc..its good to start practicing early. Also one needs to brush up on one’s general knowledge and read the newspaper regularly. This will help you understand the job scenario, as well as help you speak in the group discussions.

B.Sc or B.Tech?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bachelor of Technology is an undergraduate academic degree conferred after completion of a three or four year program of studies at an accredited university or accredited university-level institution. The common abbreviation for Bachelor of Technology is B.Tech. The degree is conferred in the Commonwealth of Nations, Republic of Ireland, India, the United States and elsewhere.

In India, the Bachelor of Technology degree is conferred by the nation’s top ranked government universities of technology like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi, National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) as well as a host of other prestigious institutes (both public and privately funded ) like Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU, Delhi), Mumbai University Institute of Chemical Technology (UICT, Matunga, Mumbai), College of Engineering, Pune (COEP), Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI, Matunga, Mumbai), Vardhaman Engineering College(HYDERABAD), Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (DA-IICT, Gandhinagar, India) for their professional engineering programs. However most other institutions in India use the Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree and some of them are in the process of replacing over to the B.Tech programme.

A Bachelor of Science (B.S., B.Sc. or BSc in the UK; less commonly, S.B., B.S.c. or Sc.B. from the Latin Scientiæ Baccalaureus) is an undergraduate academic degree awarded for completed courses that generally last three to five years.

Commonly in the Commonwealth and Ireland graduands are admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Science after having completed a programme in one or more of the sciences. These programmes may take different lengths of time to complete.

A Bachelor of Science receives the designation B.Sc. or B.S. for a major/pass degree and B.Sc. (Hons) or B.S. (Hons) for an honours degree.

 Question from Yahoo Answers

Whish is better bsc biotech or btech biotech and which has better job oppurtunities?

Answer 1)
B.Tech biotechnology is more better than B.Sc biotechnology.Because both are bachelor courses but if u go for opportunities B.Tech has preference. So,If u don’t go with degree means B.Sc.In degree u have theory and less practical But with B.Tech u will have more practical and theory. And u may have confusion with B.Sc(Biotechnology) is not a single course. It has multiple subjects so choosing a course is tidy for you.So better go with B.Tech than B.Sc

Answer 2)
Both are two different things. Bsc Biotec is degree cource and BTec biotec is eng. (4 yrs)
If you want to do BSc Biotec you need to again give an entrance test after completion of BSc for MSc and a then do Phd. Its lenghty but a good course.
If you have dedication, good family support then you can try for Bsc Biotec.
Gen. Btec biotec are taken by student who want to complete their eng course and do MBA and get a job.
However both are good and there is good opportunity in both the cases.
India is far behind , you need to do a very hard work through out if you have that dedication pl proceed.

Answer 3) from MAYBE NOW.com
i think btech is better than bsc.if u preafer teaching line than bsc honers is good.becoz by that u get specialised in a perticular stream.ND if u r not interested in teaching line than btech is good.In private companies demand of btech is quiet in as compared to bsc.By doing mba after that one can very nicely settle him/herself .well one can do mtech if he/she want to b a lecturrer.

What 2 do after 10th….

There was certain information I was looking for on the net, that I did not, that was first-hand info, for somone as blank as I was, about college. Hence I’l thought I’d share my story about my ’13th standard’ (thats what it was for me till a few years back 🙂 and everything leading up to it..
I remember ..this same time ,3 summers back, I was fresh out of St.Mary’s school with a 94.2% in the boards. I was full of confidence ,looking down upon all the lower folk who couldn’t do as well as me .
Ofcourse in today’s Competitive world perhaps even 99.99% is not enough for coaxing ,nagging parents, nevertheless I felt I’d achieved somthing. So now what? I was impatient for college. The Bollywood movies had painted a preety rosy picture of ‘Hanging out’, ‘bunking’ ,a wonderful perfect life complete with my knight in shining armour ..No more slogging away all night over bald revolutionaries (I meant the history textbook ;)..no more studies..I know you gals and guys must be laughing your gut out at my naiveness. For what followed…
Some one of my friends had started going to some sort of wierd classes that charged 45k for two years coaching..sheesh..which idiot would pay so much! Why I’d never really needed any most of my life. Now what was that ‘it-chy’ ? Sorry ..’it-gee’? Ohhh! Ok IIT -JEE ! Supposedly some elusive ,inaccessible accomplishment meant only for an elite few superhumanly intelligent students.
Bahhhh ! A piece of cake …I’ve got 94.2 havn’t I ?!
I decided to attend the orientation just to show the lowly being how its done ..But what I was in for that day ,I’d have never imagined..it was almost like an awakening.
With every word THE God of all things Brainy- Mr.Lalit Kumar pronounced I felt like sinking further more into the ground! It was a different experience..nothing like the bookish ‘mugging’ work I was used to. I felt stupid. The others students fared much better. I realized I’d been a frog in a pond all along..

What to do After B.Tech
If you prefer to continue your studies you can do Post graduate courses and then obtain a Ph.D. You have lots of options during this P.G course like M.S/ M.Tech, IAS/IPS, Navy/NDA and Finance related courses like MBA.
M.S/M.Tech:If you prefer doing P.G in your field of study, you can go for M.S/M.Tech. If you are ready to go outside India and financially sound you can prefer M.S. You need to appear for GRE/TOEFL for doing M.S in Foreign countries.
GRE: The Graduate Record Examination or GRE is a standardized test that is an admissions requirement for many graduate schools in English speaking countries. It is created and administered by the Educational Testing Service and is similar in format and content to the SAT. It is a computer based Online Test. The percentile scored in this exam will decide your future in doing M.S in foreign nations
TOEFL: The Test of English as a Foreign Language (or TOEFL®, pronounced “toe-full” or sometimes “toffle”) evaluates the potential success of an individual to use and understand Standard American English at a college level. It is required for non-native applicants at many English-speaking colleges and universities. A TOEFL score is valid for two years and then is deleted from the official database. The TOEFL® test is a registered trademark of Educational Testing Service (ETS®) and is administered worldwide. The test was first administered 1964 and has since been taken by nearly 20 million students.Since its introduction in late 2005, the Internet-based test (iBT) has progressively replaced both the computer-based (CBT) and paper-based (PBT) tests. The iBT has been introduced in phases, with the United States, Canada, France, Germany, and Italy in 2005 and the rest of the world in 2006, with test centers added regularly. The demand for test seats remains very high even after almost a year after the introduction of the test: Candidates have to wait for months since short-term test dates are fully booked. The four-hour test consists of four sections, each measuring mainly one of the basic language skills (although some tasks may require multiple skills) and focusing on language used in an academic, higher-education environment. Note-taking is allowed in the iBT.
GATE: Conducted by one of seven Indian Institutes of Technology in rotation, Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an annual exam for admission to M.Tech and M.S. programmes in most engineering institutes in India[citation needed]. It is regarded as a benchmark test for engineering graduates in India [citation needed]. This examination is coordinated by a committee, comprising of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordinating Board – GATE, Department of Education, and Government of India. The pattern and syllabus are usually based on a candidate’s B.Tech. Or BE syllabus. Minimum eligibility for appearing in this exam is usually a B.Tech, BE, B. Arch. or Masc. The exam is usually conducted on second Sunday of February.PSU’s like BARC, NPCIL, HAL etc. give importance to GATE scores for various job positions in their organizations. It is not worthy for anyone doing P.G in some college other than Foreign/Indian University Colleges, and Premiere Private Engineering Colleges MBA:If you prefer doing P.G in some finance related courses you can definitely go for MBA.
GMAT: The Graduate Management Admissions Test, better known by the acronym GMAT (pronounced G-mat), is a standardized test for determining aptitude to succeed academically in graduate business studies. The GMAT is used as one of the selection criteria by most respected business schools globally, most commonly for admission into an MBA program. The GMAT is one of many factors schools use when reviewing applications for admission; it is typically balanced with work experience, grades in previous schools, recommendation letters and other admissions criteria. The fee to take the GMAT is currently US$250, worldwide. Global institutes like ISB require the entries to write GMAT.CAT: Common Admission Test is conducted by IIMs in India for entry to various IIMs present in India. Admissions are based on the scores in CAT exam.
Indian Civil Service: The Indian Civil Service serves as the backbone of India and carries great respect and responsibilities. India’s best brains vie for entry into the Indian Civil Services as officers. Even though corporate jobs may offer the best of salaries and perks, a majority of youngsters and their parents still crave entry to the prestigious Indian Civil Services held by the UPSC. The very fact that a big share of every year’s top posts in the civil services exams are bagged by professionals from various streams, shows that the IAS is still the dream job for many
These are most preferred routes by engineering students in education after B.Tech

Job/ work:
Software industry:What ever the branch you are in during your engineering you can get into a software industry with simply communication skills. It is good if you get a job during the campus placements itself because it is really difficult to find a job after you come out of the college. However there are various kinds of jobs in Software industry which you get accordingly as your course of study or your specialization. It is ok if you do job for sometime and start studying again for your P.G courses.
Own Company:If you are financially sound, you can start your own company with a little experience in some other company. Still there are various choices in jobs like lecturer in some famous engineering college, call center jobs, etc.

“I love cooking dogs” – CV Bloopers
“I love cookind dog”, “I was responsible for dissatisfied customers”, “My job is to pervert unauthorised people from coming onto site”, “I have excellent poof-reading skills”… Fret not. These are only bloopers from job applicants, a new survey of CV blunders has revealed.
According to the survey, 94 per cent of job hunters risked missing out on vacancies through poor spelling, grammar or presentation on their CVs.
What’s hilarious is that in some cases, applicants’ attempts to impress potential employers failed through the odd missed word, with phrases such as: “I was responsible for dissatisfied customers.”
For others, the omission of a single letter consigned their CV to the dustbin: “I am a pubic relations officer.” And sparing use of comma led to seemingly embarrassing disclosures of equal note: “My interests include cooking dogs.”
From a sample of 450 CVs, researchers found that 81 per cent were laden with spelling and grammatical errors, while nearly half were poorly laid out. A mere six per cent were error-free, the survey has found.
In fact, mistakes were not confined to applicants for menial roles either – many of the CVs riddled with errors were drafted by CEOs, professionals and recent graduates, the researchers from Personal Career Management said.
“Many of the people whose CVs end up in the waste paper bin are perfectly capable of doing the job. However, a poor CV means they will not get the opportunity to prove it.
“Why would anyone want to employ a lawyer or a secretary who makes spelling mistakes or errors? If they can’t pay attention to their own CV, why would you trust them to work on any of your documents?” Corinne Mills of PCM was quoted by ‘The Daily Telegraph’ as saying. It seems no one is above mistakes!
